So in addition to a supply of charming renovated historical homes, newer contemporary and Mediterranean-style homes are being built. Because of the area’s high density, many original homes are being torn down to create lots. The no-frills lamp has just one brightness setting, so it’s very easy to use. Since the lamp’s illuminated surface faces the floor and its on/off switch is easy to reach, you never have to look directly at the light to turn on the lamp or adjust its position. (We could comfortably sit and read underneath it.) Second, the lamp’s light is unlikely to get in your eyes. First, the 4-foot lamp is tall enough to provide overhead light. And that unusual design gives the lamp two advantages. Whereas most light therapy lamps are shaped like tablets or boxes, this one looks like a classic floor lamp. We loved that this lamp offered bright overhead light, thanks to its height and its floor lamp design. Of all the light therapy lamps we tested, the Lavish Home Floor Lamp was the best at diffusing light across the room. This pattern continued every night of the test, leading him to feel more well-rested and alert every morning. The editor that tested this lamp often wakes up frequently during the night, but since he started using this lamp, he was consistently sleeping through the night. This table lamp is also easy to move around, thanks to its 3.25-pound weight and long power cord.Īlthough we didn't find this lamp to have an impact on our mood, it did seem to dramatically improve our sleep quality. Simply plug it in, open the stand on the back, and push the big button on the front. ![]() Unsurprisingly, we found this lamp very easy to use. Turn it on, and you’ll get 10,000 lux of light. The no-frills lamp has just one brightness setting. But its beginner-friendly design and accessible price point make it a great option for people who want to give light therapy lamps a try without commitment. The Carex Light Therapy Lamp isn’t made from durable materials or packed with fancy features. Throughout our five-day test, this lamp made us feel more alert and energized, and while the lamp didn’t seem to impact our sleep quality, it did boost our mood. ![]() We also appreciate that the lamp’s long power cord makes it easy to use in different places. We love that this light therapy lamp has a lever that lets you tilt it back or forward, so you can get the exact angle that you want when positioning the light. And its adjustable base makes it easy to angle. At 12.5 inches tall and 6.25 inches wide, it’s small enough to place on your table, desk, or nightstand. The lamp is also compact and easy to use. But by day four, we preferred the brighter setting and found it more effective. We did exactly this: At the start of our test, we preferred the dimmer setting because we found the brighter one to be a little too intense. Thankfully, the lamp comes with two brightness settings, so it’s easy to start with the dimmer setting and work your way up to the brighter one. That’s the recommended light intensity for a light therapy lamp, but it may seem harsh at first. The Verilux HappyLight Light Therapy Lamp was one of the most effective lamps we tested, boosting our energy level every time we used it.Īt its brightest, the lamp delivers 10,000 lux of light. Then we had a physician and a member of our Review Board review the article for medical accuracy. And they also assessed the lamps for design, ease of use, and value. Every day, testers noted their mood, energy level, and sleep quality before and after using their lamp. Each tester assessed one lamp at a time, using that lamp for 30 minutes daily for five straight days. To find the best light therapy lamps, we tested 15 top-rated options at home, performing five-day tests to find the eight best lamps. A good light therapy lamp should suit your space, offer 10,000 lux of light exposure, and make it easy to adjust brightness when needed. And though it’s unclear how light therapy works, some suspect the bright light exposure may boost serotonin (the “happy chemical” that naturally occurs in our bodies) or reset our circadian rhythms. As you shop for light therapy lamps, consider size, style, light intensity, and brightness settings. Regular light therapy has been shown to alleviate symptoms of SAD, depression, and other mood disorders. Some of the best aspects of light therapy are that you don't need a prescription to reap the benefits, the lamps are widely available, and you can use them at home: Simply turn on your light therapy lamp and sit near it for a set period of time (typically 15–60 minutes). Light therapy lamps are bright lamps commonly used to boost mood and energy levels or to treat conditions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression, or sleep disorders. ![]() ![]() ![]() A-S-Robot: Oh man Look how huge he is Hope you like my Bastion I made. House says her mentor during college, associate professor of graphic design Christopher Houltberg, even adapted the curriculum with some of her research findings. That exhibition also traveled to First Avenue and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. ![]() That research project culminated in a 2018 Augsburg exhibition featuring nine Black graphic designers from the 20th century, including Emory Douglas, the Minister of Culture for the Black Panthers, and Dorothy Hayes, who House says was a mentor to the next generation of designers. “So, I just imagine Black women and femmes are right down there, and just not going to get the credit that we deserve in those spaces. And I was looking specifically at Black designers, and they were almost never credited,” House said at the artist talk. “When I was doing some research on the history of Black graphic designers, one thing that I found was it was very rarely that designers, in general, were credited for things. She was a graphic design student at the time and says that she couldn’t name one Black graphic designer. It is part of her ongoing research project, “Where Are All the Black Designers?”, which she started as an undergraduate at Augsburg a few years go. There is another reason, House says, for an art exhibition featuring graphic designers. On a salvaged lightbox sign, Sharp painted the monster’s words from Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”: “Beware for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.” Moses chose to create her own quote, “Occupy Space with Glory,” to take up more space, she says. Jackson, for one, chose an excerpt from science fiction author Octavia Butler: “Change is the one unavoidable, irresistible, ongoing reality of the universe,” painted across layered pieces of wood in a cosmic installation. “But each of the artists kind of started asking me individually, do you mind if I explore something else?”įox and House prompted the group to create an artwork to illuminate a meaningful text or quote. “I really expected it to be like a majority poster show, you know, just like thinking what a typical designer would do,” says House, explaining that designers usually have to create for a client, who is not typically themselves. ![]() The two galleries overflow with colors and patterns at a large scale. ![]() With “To Illuminate Abundance,” the design partners wanted to collectively imagine a sort of Afrofuturist space where Black women and femmes can celebrate a life beyond surviving and depictions of trauma.Īlong with Moses, House and Fox, designers Ashley Koudou, Kelsi Sharp, Leeya Rose Jackson, Marcia Rowe, Olivia Anizor and Sabrina Peitz created everything from digitally designed photographic memory quilts and murals inspired by playlists curated for healing to a tufted carpet installation celebrating curly hair. “It was basically to amplify voices of the Black community and be able to share and reach an audience for the Black community that they normally don't have access to, or aren't aware of, the opportunities because they're not handed to them,” Fox says. ![]() They say the number, 13.4, comes from a recent study that found that Black people make up 13.4 percent of the U.S. It is a production of their 13.4 Collective, led and made up by Black artists and designers. But on Monday I could NOT get away with that and needed to apply this and concealer on top. I got a good deal of sleep last night so I was able to use this and only this without applying concealer on top. It provided just enough to give my eyes a natural, brighter appearance. I personally didn’t mind the lack of pigment. However, correctors should have a fair amount of pigment to work best and this is a pretty sheer product. It’s sort of an unnecessary step due to the lack of pigment. In the end, you’re probably better off just finding the most pigmented concealer you can and using that to conceal darkness versus using this AND a concealer to do that work for. Yeah, you’ll get a nice bit of brightening from it but if you want it to really conceal and correct your dark circles this isn’t quite going to do the job. ![]() On the other hand, the lack of pigment means you aren’t getting a powerful color correcting finish. The thinner consistency and the sheerness of the products makes it an ideal product to layer with other products without being too overdone.
